Public Comment Requested – Jan. 14, 2019 to Feb. 28, 2019 at 5 p.m.
Information as posted on the Washington Dept of Ecology’s website
We are seeking public comment on Clallam County’s proposed Shoreline Master Program (SMP).
The proposed Shoreline Master Program will entirely replace the county’s 1976 program, last amended in 1992. The updated goals, policies, regulations, environment designations, and administrative provisions are locally tailored to reflect current conditions and community vision for future shoreline use and development. The updated master program prioritizes water-oriented activities, public access, habitat protection, and ecological restoration, and allows for legal existing uses and structures to continue.
The master program applies to approximately 131 miles of marine shoreline, 481 miles of rivers and creeks shorelines, and six lakes totaling approximately 1,500 acres. County shorelines of statewide significance include the marine waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Pacific Ocean, as well as the Bogachiel, Calawah, Elwha, Quillayute, and Sol Duc Rivers. Many additional county shorelines along local rivers, creeks, and lakes are also covered by the SMP.
We will compare Clallam County’s proposed program to the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. Based on the comparison, we will decide whether to:
- Approve the program as is or with recommended changes.
- Or send the proposed program back to the county with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.
