August 16, 2021 – Sequim WA – Derek Huntington, former candidate for Sequim School Board has endorsed Virginia Sheppard for election to the Board. They were among four candidates competing in the Primary Election for the Director at Large Position, Number 4 on the School Board.

Sheppard qualified for the General Election by receiving the second highest vote count. Huntington did not advance to the General Election. Also on the Ballot were Rachel Tax, who lost in the Primary,  and Kristi Schmeck, who garnered enough votes to qualify for the General Election. Schmeck had withdrawn from the race, but too late for her name to be removed from the ballot and voter’s guide.  To date, she has not filed the financial paperwork as required with the Public Disclosure Commission (PDC).  She will  now advance to the General Election and face Virginia Sheppard.

Sequim Voters seeking change in the Sequim Schools now have the opportunity to have their vote recorded and counted in the electoral process.

Sheppard graduated from Port Angeles High School, and has worked as a Volunteer Teaching Assistant, Playground Attendant, and Volunteer Art Teacher for grades 1 – 8.  She has served as Master of the Grange in Curtis, Washington, and Volunteer Treasurer for many organizations including the PTA and PTO.

She believes our public schools must fully balance the “college bound” track with an equally weighted “career bound” or “trade bound” track.  I will champion Career/Technical Education as a coequal objective, not a second, less desirable choice.  We should be attracting children into this track on its clear and obvious merits, not sidetracking them into it as a placeholder until they graduate. She is very concerned about the teaching of Critical Race Theory and the sex “ed” classes starting in kindergarten, and has been sharing information at various meeting about both issues.

Derek Huntington wrote: “Virginia has my support. You definitely have my endorsement going forward.”
